Caring For Your Fresh Flower Delivery Bouquet

Now that you have received your beautiful flower delivery or flower bouquet, how do you care for your fresh flowers?
The first thing that you should do is cut the stems of the flowers at an angle with a sharp un-serrated knife, remove the leaves that will be below the water, then immediately place flowers in water. It is important to remember do not remove the thorns from roses, as it tends to shorten their life. To lengthen the lives of your flowers cut the stems underwater, a fresh water droplet will stick to the freshly cut flower stem, and protect it from air bubbles and bacteria.
Don't throw away the packets that come with your flower delivery. The florist packets help your fresh flowers live longer. When the florist cuts the flower from the plant, the flower loses all life support systems. The freshly cut flower is now in danger of contracting bacteria that will effect your flowers beauty and life. Your flower's buds will not open, your flower's leaves will wilt, and your flower's stem will become weak causing the neck to weaken and bend.
If you are uncomfortable using chemicals, here are a few more "natural" ways to prolong the life of your fresh delivered flower bouquet:
Put a penny and an aspirin in the water.
Add one part lemon-lime soda (not diet) to 3 parts water. Then to each quart of this solution, add 1/4 teaspoon bleach. Thereafter, add 1/4 teaspoon bleach after each 4 days of use.
To 1 quart water add 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon bleach.
Add 2 ounces Listerine mouthwash per gallon of water. Listerine contains sucrose (food) and a bactericide. Listerine is acidic and is said help water move up the cut stem.
Easy Ways to Keep Flowers Fresh For Longer!
Use plain, lukewarm water for most cut flowers, but use cold water for bulb flowers, such as daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips.
Change the water every 2 days -- don't just top it off. This is the single most effective thing you can do to keep your flowers looking fresh.
Keep flowers out of direct sunlight, and move them to a cool place at night.
Give daffodils their own vase -- daffodil stems give off a compound that is toxic to other flowers.
Keep cut flowers away from fruit, which releases a gas that causes flowers to age faster.
